History at Kenmont
History Intent
At Kenmont Primary School, we want our children to love history. Our aim is that, through the teaching of History, we stimulate children’s interest and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past.
We teach children to develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage. This enables our children to learn to value their own and other people’s cultures in modern multi-cultural Britain.
History will also ensure our pupils understand how Britain developed as a society, contributing to their understanding of their country of residence.
At Kenmont, we have developed a progression of skills with each year group, which enables pupils to build on and develop their skills each year.
History begins by looking at the children’s own personal history and introduces them to the idea of chronology and timelines. Pupils will study significant events and people who have shaped society, locally, nationally and globally.
Pupils are given a knowledge organiser at the start of each topic which details some key information, dates and vocabulary. This is used as a reference document to support them with their acquisition of knowledge.
We plan for effective use of educational visits and visitors, to enrich and enhance the pupil’s learning experience and the History curriculum.
Children understand that different versions of the past may exist and be able to give some reasons for this.
Cross-curricular links are planned for, with other subjects such as Writing, Drama and Art.
History Impact
The impact of this curriculum design will lead to good progress over time across key stages relative to a child’s individual starting point and their progression of skills.
Pupils to develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time.
Know where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods.
Understand some of the ways in which we find out about the past and identify different ways in which it is represented.
Almost all of our pupils are expected to leave Kenmont reaching age-related expectations as the history curriculum will lead pupils to be enthusiastic learners, evidenced in a range of ways, including through their voice and their work.
Progression of Skills and Knowledge
History progression of skills and knowledge document details how our curriculum builds pupils knowledge and skills over their time at the school.
